How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Shower Glass for Good
Southern California water is hard, and shower glass shows it first. What actually dissolves mineral scale, what damages glass, and how to keep it clear afterwards.

The white haze on shower glass is calcium and magnesium carbonate. It arrives dissolved in your water, dries on the glass after every shower, and slowly builds a film that a squeegee will not shift. San Diego water is among the harder supplies in the region, so glass shower doors there can go from clear to milky in under two years.
What not to do
- Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive powders. They scratch the glass permanently and give scale somewhere to grip.
- Do not use acidic descalers on glass next to marble, travertine or limestone. Overspray etches the stone and leaves dull spots that need re-polishing.
- Do not rely on daily 'shower shine' sprays alone once a haze has formed. They prevent, they do not dissolve.
The glass-safe way to remove scale
- Soak the panel with a dedicated mineral-dissolving gel rather than spraying and wiping — the product needs time on the scale to work.
- Work in small sections and use a non-scratch pad, keeping the surface wet the whole time.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a squeegee, not a towel, to avoid leaving lint and moisture behind.
- Repeat the same day for heavy build-up rather than scrubbing harder — the chemistry does the work, not the pressure.
Keeping glass clear between services
A squeegee takes about eight seconds and removes most of the mineral load before it dries. Add a monthly application of a glass sealant, use the exhaust fan every shower, and leave the door open afterwards so humidity escapes. Those three habits make the difference between glass that lasts five years and glass that lasts fifteen.
When the spots are not on the glass at all
If the marks survive a proper mineral removal and stay visible from both sides, the glass itself has been etched by years of scale and acidic cleaners. That damage is inside the surface and no cleaner will lift it. At that point the realistic options are replacing the panel or accepting the haze — and the reason we push prevention so hard.
We remove mineral scale from shower glass as part of every deep clean, then advise on sealing so it does not come back at the same pace.
